Sky Finalizes Migration Upgrade: MKR to SKY Transition with New Staking Features
02.05.2025 11:09
Sky’s governance team, led by Atlas Axis, has finalized a proposal to complete the migration from MKR to SKY tokens. The upgrade introduces staking functionality and aims to make SKY the exclusive governance token with a 1:24,000 exchange rate, while only 14% of MKR has currently been migrated. This transition is designed to enhance the protocol’s income distribution by increasing incentives for SKY holders through potential buybacks and USDS rewards, and to eliminate fixed costs by the end of 2025. The proposal, which follows MakerDAO’s rebranding to Sky in 2024, is scheduled to be implemented between May 15 and 19, 2025. Historical trends and similar governance upgrades suggest that these changes could stabilize the system’s governance structure over the long term, although the initial migration phase might bring short-term volatility as the legacy MKR token’s role diminishes.
The news indicates a clear reduction in MKR's role as SKY takes over governance. With only 14% of MKR migrated so far, investors might experience short-term volatility due to uncertainty about the full migration process. Long term, as the protocol shifts its focus exclusively to SKY, MKR could face decreased demand and lower valuation. The immediate impact is compounded by historical migration events where legacy tokens lose utility, although the definitive price drop will depend on the migration pace and market sentiment during the transition.
The finalized upgrade and introduction of staking, along with USDS incentive mechanisms and buyback potential, are likely to exert a positive influence on SKY’s price. In the short term, the anticipation of broader adoption and enhanced utility can drive upward pressure. Over the long term, if the migration is successfully completed and the protocol stabilizes under the new governance system, SKY could benefit from increased investor confidence and improved financial performance. Historical instances of similar migrations suggest that new governance tokens often see significant gains as they secure utility within the ecosystem.
