EU to Ban Privacy Coins and Anonymous Crypto Accounts by 2027 Under New AML Regulation
02.05.2025 20:43
The European Union will implement strict Anti-Money Laundering Regulation (AMLR) beginning in 2027, banning privacy coins and anonymous cryptocurrency accounts across member states. Credit institutions, financial institutions, and crypto-asset service providers (CASPs) will be prohibited from handling or maintaining privacy-focused tokens and will need to perform customer due diligence for transactions over €1,000. Centralized crypto service providers operating in six or more member states will be subject to direct supervision by the new AML Authority starting July 1, 2027. The regulatory framework is finalized, but detailed implementation guidance will be released in the coming years. These rules target cryptocurrencies designed for anonymity—including privacy coins—while enforcing stricter identification and oversight across the EU’s crypto market.
XMR is likely to face strong selling pressure as EU bans privacy coins, curbing major market access and demand. Historically, regulatory crackdowns on privacy coins have resulted in price drops.
ZEC will face similar negative pressure as XMR, as EU regulations explicitly target privacy features, reducing demand and limiting usage in regulated markets.
DASH, offering privacy options, will also be impacted by the ban. Reduced access in the EU—historically an important market—will likely trigger a short-to-medium-term price decline.
