In May 2025, Paris experienced a troubling surge in kidnapping attempts targeting cryptocurrency industry executives, prominently including the family of Pierre Noizat, co-founder of Paymium. Instances of abductions and attempts have raised serious security concerns throughout the French crypto sector.
One notable incident involved the daughter and grandson of a Paymium co-founder, attacked by a masked gang in broad daylight in Paris's 11th arrondissement. Bystanders intervened, utilizing a dropped firearm and a fire extinguisher to thwart the attackers. Despite sustaining minor injuries, the family was hospitalized. The Paris Prosecutor's Office initiated an investigation into the coordinated crime, citing charges such as attempted kidnapping, unlawful detention, assault with aggravating circumstances, and criminal conspiracy.
Previously, in January 2025, David Balland, another crypto figure, was abducted, marking a disturbing pattern of targeted attacks within France's crypto community. French officials, including Senator Bruno Retailleau, called for and implemented enhanced protections and immediate security measures to safeguard crypto executives and dissuade further crime.
Experts note these crimes resemble cartel-like activities, however, the traceability of ransom payments in cryptocurrency offers a tool for law enforcement to combat such offenses successfully. This has resulted in calls for more robust crime prevention strategies within the industry, highlighting vulnerabilities associated with managing digital assets. The incidents have amplified industry anxiety and underscored the urgent need for long-term security solutions.
