Yuga Labs has officially sold the intellectual property (IP) rights of the Moonbirds NFT collection, including Mythics and Oddities, to blockchain gaming startup Orange Cap Games (OCG). This marks a significant shift as Yuga Labs divests from the project less than two years after acquiring it through its purchase of Proof Collective in early 2024.
Orange Cap Games, known for its Vibes TCG trading card ecosystem, plans to revitalize the dormant Moonbirds community by focusing on product-led development centered on gaming, collectibles, and culture. OCG intends to integrate Moonbirds into its gaming universe and launch new related products. New on-chain components will be hosted on Ethereum or ApeChain, Yuga Labs' Layer 2 blockchain.
This acquisition aligns with Yuga Labs' broader strategy to concentrate on core assets like the Otherside metaverse, Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC), and the ApeCoin ecosystem. Earlier in 2025, Yuga similarly divested Meebits and CryptoPunks IPs to other stewards focused on revitalizing those projects. Despite Yuga’s exit, Moonbirds will still maintain interoperability within the Otherside metaverse by providing 3D avatars for holders.
Moonbirds originally launched in April 2022 and quickly garnered more than $280 million in trading volume, blending fine art visuals with membership utility. However, activity waned under Yuga Labs as focus shifted to metaverse development. Industry analysts see this IP sale as part of a consolidation trend where major NFT firms are reallocating assets to enable leaner operations and long-term brand development.
No financial details have been disclosed regarding the transaction, but Orange Cap Games now holds full creative and distribution control over the Moonbirds IP and sub-collections. The company’s focus on product quality and tangible experiences may breathe new life into the Moonbirds ecosystem, melding physical and digital assets to expand its cultural relevance.
