Coinbase has rebranded its Coinbase Wallet as the Base app, unveiling it as a comprehensive "everything app" during its "A New Day One" conference in Los Angeles on July 16, 2025. The new platform integrates social networking, crypto trading, payments, and app discovery into a single interface built on Coinbase's Ethereum Layer-2 blockchain, Base.
Key features include an open social network powered by Farcaster where creators monetize content directly, integrated trading for buying/selling cryptocurrencies, and NFC-based USDC payments via "Base Pay"—starting with Shopify merchants. The app also hosts hundreds of mini-apps for gaming and DeFi, end-to-end encrypted messaging with AI agents, and a "Sign in with Base" universal identity system. Content posts are tokenized as collectibles using Zora's protocol.
John Granata, Head of Product, emphasized the app aims to "expand economic freedom and creativity," positioning it as a gateway for mainstream crypto adoption. Currently in beta with a waitlist, Base app competes with super apps like WeChat and Meta.
