The Sandbox has launched its Game Maker and Game Client 0.12 update, introducing significant enhancements to multiplayer functionality and creator capabilities. Released on August 7, 2025, the free update is now available for PC and Mac users via thesandbox.game.

For players, the update enables saved progress in select experiences, smarter chat systems (including Metaverse Chat and Local Chat), and new movement abilities like Dash and Glide. It features a cinematic UI with upgraded onboarding, dynamic menus, and 3D backdrops. Players can now preview collectibles in 3D galleries, auto-equip items during gameplay, and travel between experiences without interrupting sessions. Spatial audio powered by Wwise technology provides immersive sound with terrain-based effects and Atmos support.

Creators gain no-code tools for dynamic NPC behaviors (healing, following, gathering) and Saved Data logic for persistent gameplay across sessions. The update includes smarter multiplayer matchmaking, four new asset libraries (The British Museum, Architecture, Interior Design, Terrain Colors), and three game templates (Shooters, Action RPG, Business Tycoon). Over 2,500 custom sounds are accessible through Wwise integration.

Chief Product Officer Simon Berger-Perrin stated: "With every update, we move closer to realizing our vision of a connected, creator-powered metaverse." To celebrate, The Sandbox is hosting Game Jams tournaments featuring themes like The Smurfs and Teletubbies, offering creators a share of a 130,000 SAND prize pool and exclusive LAND plots over 4-6 weeks.
