The Algorand Foundation has named Nikolaos Bougalis as its new Chief Technology Officer, effective September 29, 2025. Bougalis, who previously served as the engineering lead at Ripple for nearly a decade, where he guided development of the open-source XRP Ledger, will now lead Algorand's technical efforts. His appointment follows the departure of former CTO John Woods in May 2025, who stepped down for personal reasons.
Bougalis will play a pivotal role in strengthening Algorand's blockchain technology, with a focus on decentralization, scalability, and security. He is expected to align the foundation's efforts with Algorand's 2025 technical roadmap, unveiled in July, which emphasizes mainstream adoption, Web3 integration, enterprise use cases, and cutting-edge cryptography. Additionally, Bougalis will support the foundation's strategic push to expand its presence in the U.S., including relocation plans announced in August, aiming to attract domestic enterprises seeking compliant and scalable blockchain infrastructure.
Algorand Foundation CEO Staci Warden expressed strong confidence in Bougalis, stating, "Nik brings a wealth of experience in distributed systems, cryptography, and blockchain, as well as a demonstrated ability to foster collaborative development communities. He will help us double down on decentralization, performance, and security." The news coincided with a 2.6% increase in the ALGO token's price over 24 hours, amid a broader crypto market rally. Algorand, launched in 2019, aims to provide instant finality and low fees for applications in payments, identity, supply chain, and asset tokenization, serving millions of users and a global developer community.
