Binance founder Changpeng 'CZ' Zhao has publicly addressed ongoing criticisms regarding the exchange's listing fees, asserting that crypto projects are not obligated to pay for listings and should be evaluated based on their merit and potential. In response to comments from Coinbase lead developer Jesse Pollack, who labeled Binance's model as 'expensive and extractive,' CZ emphasized that strong projects naturally attract exchanges without needing to pay fees. He stated, 'If your project is strong, exchanges will race to list your coin. If you have to beg an exchange to list, then... You need to ask yourself why, and who is providing value to whom.'

The debate has highlighted alternative decentralized platforms like Hyperliquid, which allow permissionless token listings with only gas fees, offering transparency and reduced dependency on centralized intermediaries. However, Binance remains a top choice due to its high liquidity and global reach, with many tokens performing airdrops to BNB holders for added exposure. CZ also cited PancakeSwap as an example of a fee-free model with strong trading volume, underscoring that different business models can coexist in the crypto space. He urged projects to focus on building quality rather than blaming exchanges and called for competitors to refrain from attacking each other's policies.

Despite reports that Binance sometimes requests up to 10% of a token's supply for listing, CZ maintained that exchanges balance inclusivity, safety, and profitability, with fees serving as a filter against fraudulent projects. This discussion reflects a broader trend toward increased transparency and choice for emerging crypto projects, as both centralized and decentralized pathways evolve.
