Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has publicly endorsed ZKsync's latest "Atlas" upgrade, describing the team's efforts as "underrated and valuable" in a social media post. The upgrade, developed by Matter Labs, achieves over 15,000 transactions per second, one-second zero-knowledge finality, and near-zero fees, marking a substantial leap in blockchain performance.
Atlas fundamentally transforms Ethereum's liquidity dynamics by enabling Layer 2 chains to directly tap into Ethereum as a real-time liquidity hub, eliminating the need for separate liquidity pools. This integration allows ZKsync-based chains to access Ethereum's liquidity within seconds, streamlining capital movement and reducing transaction times that previously took days, especially for optimistic rollups. Buterin emphasized his excitement, stating, "ZKsync has been doing a lot of underrated and valuable work in the ethereum ecosystem. Excited to see this come from them!"
Beyond technical specs, Atlas shifts Ethereum from a passive settlement layer to an active capital hub, enhancing interoperability across Layer 2 networks like ZKsync Era, Base, and Arbitrum. Matter Labs also announced plans to decentralize ZKsync through a ZK governance token, with approximately 33% of the supply allocated to the team and investors, and an airdrop targeting long-term users of ZKsync Era and ZKsync Lite.
