Google Cloud has entered into a multi-million dollar, multi-year agreement with NATO's Communication and Information Agency (NCIA) to deliver a sovereign, air-gapped cloud environment for the Alliance’s Joint Analysis Training and Education Centre (JATEC). This partnership focuses on providing an offline cloud system powered by artificial intelligence tools, designed to handle classified workloads and enhance secure data processing for defense operations.
The system is built on Google Distributed Cloud, which remains disconnected from the internet and Google’s public cloud, ensuring sensitive information stays within NATO-controlled boundaries. This setup allows the centre to run AI-driven analytical work and training activities without external exposure, meeting strict digital sovereignty requirements. Integration is scheduled to begin in the coming months, aligning with NATO’s cybersecurity protocols.
This initiative supports NATO’s broader strategy to modernize its digital infrastructure, improve operational efficiency, and strengthen technological readiness across its 30+ member states. The platform is expected to reduce reliance on older systems and provide a flexible, scalable environment for future mission needs.
