OpenAI has announced a series of massive cloud compute contracts totaling over $1 trillion, with key partnerships involving Microsoft, Oracle, and Nvidia. These multi-year agreements are aimed at addressing severe compute constraints and building infrastructure for an AI-powered economy.

The deals include a $250 billion contract with Microsoft and a $38 billion agreement with Amazon, boosting OpenAI's total contracted compute power to 36 gigawatts. However, only a third of this capacity is expected to be operational by 2030, according to an HSBC analysis.

CEO Sam Altman emphasized the strategic focus, stating, "We are trying to build infrastructure for a future AI-powered economy... Even today, we and others have to limit our products and don't offer new features and models because we are facing such a severe compute constraint." The initiative rejects government bailout rumors in favor of private investment.

HSBC's report highlights a $207 billion funding gap that OpenAI must fill by 2030, with cumulative rental costs projected to reach $792 billion by then and $1.4 trillion by 2033. Despite modeling 3 billion users and a 10% conversion to paid subscriptions by 2030, the firm notes that OpenAI may still subsidize most users well into the next decade.
