Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin has publicly criticized Zcash's potential shift to a token-based governance model, stating that it could jeopardize the project's core values, especially privacy. In a social media statement, Buterin described token voting as "flawed in many ways" and warned it might lead to long-term erosion of decentralization.
Buterin issued a clear warning, saying, "I hope Zcash can resist the dark hand of token voting," and argued that this model is worse than Zcash's current governance. He emphasized that the "median token holder" in token voting could devalue sensitive issues like privacy over time and allow large wallets to gain excessive influence.
The Zcash ecosystem has been actively discussing governance changes in recent months, making Buterin's position particularly significant due to his prominence in the cryptocurrency space. He has previously expressed concerns that privacy-focused projects could move away from decentralization through such models.
