Supra, a MultiVM Layer-1 blockchain focused on Automatic DeFi (AutoFi), has unveiled Hydrangea++, a major advancement of its consensus protocol designed to push transaction finality toward the physical limits of information transmission. The announcement, made from Zug, Switzerland on December 3rd, 2025, positions the upgrade as a fundamental shift from designing around blockchain's historical constraints to designing at the limit of physics itself.
The company argues that for over fifteen years, the primary bottleneck for blockchain speed has been physics, not mathematics or software. Hydrangea++ is engineered to address this by integrating optimistic proposals from Supra's Moonshot algorithm into the resilience model of its original Hydrangea protocol. The result is a proposal pipeline that operates at one network delay, eliminating the constant waiting period traditional protocols require for multiple rounds of signaling before a block can be proposed.
Performance benchmarks against Minimmit, the protocol developed by Commonware for the Tempo blockchain, were conducted across 51 nodes in ten global regions. Supra reports Hydrangea++ achieves proposal latency of one network delay, demonstrates 11% lower end-to-end latency, and provides 35% higher throughput under realistic conditions compared to Minimmit, all without a reduction in security or fault tolerance. The protocol also showed stable performance during network jitter, packet loss, and node misbehavior.
Dr. Nibesh Shrestha, Lead Author and Supra Researcher, stated, "Hydrangea++ delivers fast finality without fragile assumptions. It is designed for the real-world Internet... offering blazing-fast performance when the network is good and unwavering safety when it is not." He emphasized that the protocol breaks the long-standing trade-off between latency and resilience.
The implications for decentralized finance (DeFi) and smart contracts are presented as transformative. Supra claims Hydrangea++ will enable markets to move at the speed of information, allow price oracles to update fast enough to prevent arbitrage windows, ensure precise liquidations, and make multi-step transactions feel nearly atomic.
Hydrangea++ serves as the foundation for Supra's fully vertically integrated L1 stack, which also includes native oracles, verifiable randomness, automation, cross-chain communication, AI-assisted threshold oracles, and MultiVM execution environments. The aim is to provide a unified system that eliminates infrastructure friction for developers.
The protocol has already been implemented on Supra's global DevNet and benchmarked in production-level conditions. Mainnet integration is currently underway, and the full technical specification is publicly available for peer review. Supra's original Hydrangea work was recently referenced in the Ethereum Foundation's August 2025 protocol update as part of its fast-finality research track.
