The son of a Ukrainian deputy mayor was found murdered in Vienna in a case Austrian police are investigating as a cryptocurrency-related extortion and theft. Danylo Kuzmin, 21, was discovered dead in a burnt-out car in the Donaustadt district in late November. An autopsy revealed he suffered severe blunt force trauma, including head injuries and broken teeth, before the vehicle was set on fire.

Investigators believe the motive was financial, with a "very substantial amount" of cryptocurrency drained from Kuzmin's digital wallets following the attack. Police suspect the victim was violently beaten and forced to reveal his wallet passwords to enable the theft.

Two Ukrainian citizens have been arrested in connection with the crime. One suspect is 19-year-old Bohdan Reinzhuk, a university peer of Kuzmin's and the stepson of the Ukrainian ambassador to Bulgaria. The second suspect is 45-year-old Oleksandr Agoiev, a former Ukrainian customs official.

The case has drawn significant media attention in Ukraine due to the victim's status as the son of Kharkiv Deputy Mayor Serhii Kuzmin. Kharkiv Mayor Igor Terekhov has declined to comment, calling the incident a "human tragedy." While the murder highlights severe personal security risks for cryptocurrency holders, major exchanges and the broader cryptocurrency market reported no immediate impact from the incident. The investigation continues as authorities work to trace the stolen digital assets.
