Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has stated that artificial intelligence (AI) could significantly accelerate the network's development timeline while simultaneously raising its security standards. The comments were prompted by an experiment where an individual used AI to "vibe-code" Ethereum's entire 2030 roadmap in just two weeks, a feat Buterin described as "impressive" and previously "far outside the realm of possibility."
Buterin personally tested AI's coding capabilities, building an equivalent of his blog software within an hour using his laptop. He proposed that the speed gains from AI should be strategically split: half to accelerate development and the other half to bolster security through more extensive test cases, formal verification, and multiple code implementations. This approach, he argues, could remove the traditional trade-off between speed and security.
"People should be open to the possibility (not certainty! possibility) that the Ethereum roadmap will finish much faster than people expect, at a much higher standard of security than people expect," Buterin wrote on X. He cautioned, however, that the two-week roadmap experiment contained "massive caveats" including critical bugs and incomplete "stub" versions of features, emphasizing that developers will still need to wrestle with bugs and inconsistencies.
Buterin expressed excitement that AI could make "bug-free code," long considered an idealistic delusion, a realistic expectation. He framed this as essential for achieving true trustlessness in crypto systems, though he clarified that total security is impossible as code cannot perfectly encapsulate every detail in a developer's mind.
In related development news, Buterin confirmed plans for the Hegota upgrade, targeting account abstraction via EIP-8141 within a year. The upgrade will utilize "frame transactions" to separate signature approval from execution, potentially allow gas payments in alternative tokens, and improve user experience by minimizing intermediaries.
