Key takeaways:

  • KuCoin's top PoR score may attract risk-averse capital, boosting its market share against competitors.
  • The wide transparency gap highlights regulatory risk for low-scoring exchanges like bitFlyer.
  • Investor focus on verifiable reserves shifts competitive advantage from fees to trust metrics.

CryptoQuant has released its Annual Exchange Leader Report 2025, evaluating centralized exchanges across structural transparency, trading performance, reserves, and proof-of-reserves (PoR) standards. In this comprehensive assessment, KuCoin emerged as the leading exchange in PoR transparency, earning a top score of 96.7 (A+).

The report measures transparency across five key metrics: public wallet disclosure, user-level balance verification, reporting cadence, third-party attestations, and recency. KuCoin achieved the highest structural transparency standards among the eighteen trading platforms evaluated. According to CryptoQuant's findings, KuCoin combines public wallet disclosure, monthly Merkle-tree–based Proof-of-Reserves reports, user-side balance verification mechanisms, and independent third-party attestations.

The analysis revealed a significant disparity in transparency practices across the industry. Bybit ranked second with a score of 93.2, while Kraken followed closely with 88.5. However, some exchanges scored far lower, with bitFlyer receiving a mere 23.75 and an E grade. Analysts attributed poor rankings to inadequate reporting strategies.

This new transparency benchmark was established following the collapse of FTX, which led to increased industry demands for reserve verification. The report highlights that while most exchanges now publish proof-of-reserves, the quality and comprehensiveness vary dramatically. Investors are growing more demanding of verifiable balance information, making transparency a potential competitive advantage for trading platforms.

CryptoQuant emphasized that PoR systems, while valuable for establishing exchange solvency and demonstrating that customer assets are fully backed, are not perfect. They primarily verify assets rather than total liabilities. Nevertheless, Merkle-tree auditing gives users the ability to privately check their balances, providing better protection against hidden liabilities.
