In a recent Spaces broadcast, Cardano Foundation CEO Frederik Gregaard outlined a comprehensive vision for the blockchain's future, detailing significant technical, commercial, and institutional developments slated for 2026. Gregaard emphasized the close alignment between the Cardano Foundation and Input Output Global (IOG), stating they are taking "Pentad to a whole new level" with multiple teams working in concert. A key point of coordination is the distribution timeline for 70 million ADA tokens.
On the interoperability front, Gregaard announced concrete plans to integrate the Inter-Blockchain Communication (IBC) protocol into the Cardano ecosystem. A dedicated IBC hackathon is scheduled for the Builder Fest event in 2026, with Gregaard and a colleague named Julius organizing presentations and practical sessions to foster development.
A major real-world adoption milestone was revealed regarding payments. Through partnerships with Open Crypto Pay and Swiss fintech company Utrust, ADA payments have been activated in 137 SPAR supermarket stores in Switzerland. Gregaard highlighted the user benefits of this integration, including real-time on-chain settlement and low transaction fees.
Discussing the market outlook, the CEO pointed to Cardano's strong fundamentals and painted a positive picture for 2026. He identified several key growth drivers: the upcoming Plomin upgrade, the launch of the Midnight mainnet, and the potential for ADA spot Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs). Notably, Gregaard cited Bloomberg analysis estimating a 70% probability of an ADA ETF gaining approval, signaling growing institutional interest.
