Coinbase Integrates Chainlink DataLink to Bring Institutional Exchange Data On-Chain

Key takeaways:

  • Institutional-grade data on-chain via LINK could catalyze a new wave of sophisticated DeFi products and RWA tokenization.
  • COIN's strategic pivot to infrastructure provider signals a long-term bet on the convergence of traditional and decentralized finance.
  • Watch for increased demand for LINK as a key oracle asset, potentially driving its utility beyond simple price feeds.

Coinbase has partnered with Chainlink to publish its institutional-grade exchange market data on-chain for the first time. The integration utilizes Chainlink's DataLink service, making Coinbase's order book data, spot prices, and perpetual futures data from its Coinbase International Exchange and Coinbase Derivatives Exchange directly accessible to decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols.

The datasets, which underpin billions of dollars in institutional trading activity, are now available for developers building on-chain derivatives, tokenized real-world assets (RWAs), structured products, and next-generation lending risk engines. This move addresses a long-standing bottleneck in DeFi, which has typically relied on aggregated price oracles lacking the depth and granularity of a direct feed from a major institutional exchange like Coinbase.

"We're excited to build on our existing Chainlink integrations by adopting DataLink to publish Coinbase's exchange market data onchain for the first time," said Liz Martin, Vice President of Coinbase Markets. She described Chainlink's data standard as "battle-tested, institutional-grade infrastructure" and the clear choice for bringing its data into on-chain markets.

Johann Eid, Chief Business Officer at Chainlink Labs, framed the announcement as a foundational step for the future of finance. "Coinbase bringing its exchange data onchain through Chainlink sends a clear signal... We are building the programmable market infrastructure defining the next era of tokenization," Eid stated.

This integration deepens the existing partnership between the two firms. Chainlink already serves as the exclusive interoperability provider for Coinbase Wrapped Assets and secured the Base-Solana bridge launched in December 2025. The DataLink service itself is also used by traditional finance data giants like S&P Global and FTSE Russell.

The development supports Coinbase's broader vision of becoming an "everything exchange" by expanding its role from a trading platform to a provider of core data infrastructure for the entire DeFi ecosystem.
