The Hedera Governing Council has announced the addition of McLaren Racing as its newest member, granting the iconic Formula 1 and IndyCar team equal voting rights and a seat at the table for the network's protocol development. This strategic partnership aims to create new use cases in fan engagement, digital assets, and data integrity.
McLaren Racing, with hundreds of millions of followers across over 180 countries, will actively participate in shaping the Hedera network's future. Nick Martin, Co-Chief Commercial Officer of McLaren Racing, stated the move allows the team to "contribute to the evolution of the network and offer a 'seamless, secure, and scalable' fan experience on a global scale." Mance Harmon, Chairman of the Hedera Council, highlighted that McLaren brings "international reach, a digitally native fan base, and a proven track record of innovation."
The first tangible initiative from this partnership is a series of free-to-mint digital collectibles tied to the 2026 Formula 1 and IndyCar seasons. The program debuted during the Australian Grand Prix, with subsequent drops planned for the Chinese and Japanese Grands Prix. All transactions will be processed on the Hedera network, utilizing both native wallets and social login wallets to cater to Web2 users.
The project is designed as an entry point into Web3, targeting both motorsport fans new to blockchain and existing Hedera users unfamiliar with racing. Collectible holders will gain access to on-chain activities and be integrated into McLaren's Discord community. The partnership will be further showcased at HederaCon, the ecosystem's flagship conference, on May 4 in Miami Beach—an event coinciding with the Miami Grand Prix and Consensus 2026. More projects related to the F1 season are expected to be announced throughout the year.
