U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren has formally demanded a comprehensive investigation into security risks associated with Chinese-manufactured cryptocurrency mining equipment from Bitmain. In an urgent letter to the Department of Commerce, the Massachusetts Democrat cited potential espionage capabilities and power grid vulnerabilities posed by the hardware.
The request follows a previously classified investigation, known as Operation Red Sunset, conducted by U.S. authorities into security vulnerabilities in Bitmain's application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) miners. The findings of that probe were never publicly released by the Department of Homeland Security, fueling congressional concerns about transparency and national security blind spots.
Security experts have long warned about potential risk vectors in ASIC mining equipment, including manufacturer-controlled firmware updates, continuous internet connectivity, and the substantial power consumption of large-scale operations. A coordinated attack on multiple facilities could theoretically destabilize local power grids.
The political scrutiny coincides with Bitmain's pursuit of its first U.S.-based ASIC production facility and has drawn additional attention due to a U.S. Bitcoin mining company backed by the Trump family confirming its use of Bitmain hardware. The Department of Commerce now faces increasing pressure to clarify its assessment protocols and planned regulatory actions regarding these equipment vulnerabilities.
