Coinbase-Backed Base Network Integrates Succinct's ZK Tech to Enhance Security and Finality

Base, the Ethereum Layer 2 scaling network incubated by Coinbase, has integrated zero-knowledge (ZK) technology from Succinct to bolster its cryptographic security and accelerate transaction finality. The upgrade introduces Succinct's SP1 zero-knowledge virtual machine (zkVM) and Trusted Execution Environments (TEE) as enhancements to Base's existing optimistic rollup framework.

Hybrid Scaling Approach

Base originally launched as an optimistic rollup, a scaling solution that assumes transactions are valid unless disputed within a challenge period. ZK-rollups, by contrast, provide immediate cryptographic verification of transaction batches, eliminating the need for challenge periods. By adopting a hybrid model, Base can now offer 'a faster path to 1-day finality, replacing the multi-day challenge period of an optimistic rollup with cryptographic finality,' according to the announcement. This also provides a trust-minimized way to move billions in capital back to Ethereum mainnet.

Growing Network Demands

'As the network has grown, so has the need to keep strengthening the infrastructure that users and developers rely on every day,' said Wilson Cussak, head of Base Chain. 'Expanding Base with ZK proofs is a meaningful step to deepen the network's security and resiliency.' Base is among the largest Layer 2 networks by value locked and the most active by weekly transaction count, according to The Block's data.

Industry Significance

Succinct's SP1 zkVM is already widely adopted, securing some $4 billion in digital assets for protocols like Polygon, Mantle, Celestia, and Lido. The integration with Base is seen as a major vote of confidence in ZK technology as Ethereum's scaling endgame. Brian Trunzo, Chief Growth Officer at Succinct, stated: 'Base going with SP1 is the single largest vote of confidence that ZK is indeed the endgame for Ethereum scaling.'

This move aligns with Vitalik Buterin's vision for Ethereum to eventually adopt ZK-EVMs for block validation. Additionally, Base earlier this year announced plans to replace key parts of the Optimism tech stack it launched with using its own bespoke and unified solution.
