Linea, the zero-knowledge Ethereum Virtual Machine (zkEVM) Layer 2 network developed by Consensys, has taken a major step toward open governance by joining the Linux Foundation Decentralized Trust (LFDT) as a premier member. As part of this move, the project’s core ZK-rollup technology has been contributed as a new open-source project under the foundation, to be renamed Lineth.
The contribution includes the full ZK rollup stack—execution and consensus layers, a prover, a coordinator, and smart contracts running on both L1 and L2. Notably, the execution layer is based on Besu, originally built by Consensys and already part of open-source ecosystems, signaling a deeper commitment to transparent development.
Declan Fox from the Linea Consortium, a non-profit uniting key Ethereum ecosystem players, will join the LFDT governing board, working alongside representatives from DTCC, Hedera, Kaleido, and others. This gives Linea a formal role in shaping the foundation’s governance, though the Linea team retains control over critical operational functions such as the sequencer, prover, upgrade authority, and validator participation structure. The project describes this as a hybrid model that balances openness with network stability during the transition toward fuller decentralization.
The move places Linea in direct competition with other open-source ZK-rollup projects like zkSync and StarkNet, and is expected to encourage independent security audits, community contributions, and potential forks. For enterprise and government users, open-source governance can be a prerequisite for adoption, making this a strategic credibility boost. While no timeline has been given for further decentralization of the retained functions, the project team indicates it is planned as technical maturity and community readiness allow.
