Pi Network has issued a critical reminder to all Mainnet node operators: they must complete the Protocol 23 upgrade before May 15, 2026, or risk losing their connection to the network. The announcement comes as the project reports a new milestone of 421,000 active mainnet nodes and more than 10 billion PI tokens migrated to mainnet, signaling strong community engagement ahead of the transition.
The Protocol 23 upgrade is expected to deliver full smart contract functionality to the Pi blockchain, opening the door for decentralized applications, DeFi tools, and digital services. Node operators currently running Node version 0.5.4 on Windows, Mac, or Linux are urged to plan ahead because the upgrade process may be time-consuming. Pi Network uses the Stellar Consensus Protocol (SCP) instead of proof-of-work, allowing everyday users to run nodes on standard hardware without high energy costs.
The network supports three participation tiers—desktop app users, regular Nodes, and SuperNodes—with SuperNodes maintaining round-the-clock consensus. Alongside the technical push, Pi Network continues to address security concerns after a recent unauthorized server access that exposed some user data (emails, phone numbers) but did not compromise wallets or private keys. The team has begun migrating infrastructure and pursuing legal action against former partners involved in the breach. With the Enclosed Mainnet phase advancing toward Open Network, the Protocol 23 deadline marks a pivotal moment for Pi’s decentralization and long-term infrastructure plans.
