The Scottish Football Association and Chiliz announced a partnership on May 21 to launch the official $SFA Fan Token on the Socios.com platform. South Africa’s Bafana Bafana also joined the initiative, with both federations selecting The Chiliz Group to power their digital fan ecosystems. This positions Scotland and South Africa alongside Argentina, Portugal, Italy and other nations in an expanding roster of federations using on-chain fan engagement tools, deliberately timed ahead of the Summer 2026 World Cup.
The announcement coincides with Chiliz’s ongoing infrastructure upgrades under the Dragon8 hard fork, which restructured the Chiliz Chain’s tokenomics and expanded utility for the native CHZ token. The Dragon8 upgrade introduced a structured inflation mechanism for CHZ and augmented on-chain capacity needed to support simultaneous fan token programmes across dozens of partner federations and clubs.
$SFA tokens will be minted on the Chiliz Chain, a Layer-1 EVM-compatible blockchain purpose-built for sports and entertainment. Token holders gain access to tiered utility via the Socios.com app, including voting rights on select team decisions, exclusive rewards, match-day perks and behind-the-scenes content. These features are structured as engagement benefits rather than financial instruments, aligning with the partnership’s regulatory framing.
Scotland enters the ecosystem with an existing digital fan infrastructure: a SECUTIX-powered ticketing system at Hampden Park and a FanHub loyalty programme that already gamifies supporter engagement. This Web2 funnel reduces the cold-start problem typical of fan token launches. Similarly, South Africa’s massive domestic and diaspora football following presents a ready audience for token-based interaction.

For Chiliz, the 2026 World Cup cycle is its most concentrated institutional moment: multiple federation tokens, a technically upgraded chain and a tournament audience dwarfing any club-level event.
