Coinbase’s Ethereum Layer 2 network, Base, has launched a new tool called the Base MCP (Model Context Protocol) Gateway, aiming to bridge artificial intelligence interfaces and cryptocurrency wallets. The tool allows users to connect their Base Account to AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Claude, and Cursor, enabling them to execute blockchain actions through natural language commands.
With the integration, users can instruct AI agents to send funds, swap tokens, check balances, review transaction history, and interact with decentralized finance applications without navigating traditional crypto interfaces. At launch, Base MCP supports several DeFi protocols on the network, including lending platforms Morpho and Moonwell, decentralized exchange Uniswap, and perpetuals trading platform Avantis.
Base stated that the initiative is a first step toward making the onchain economy easier to use via AI, with the belief that agentic chat interfaces will eventually become a primary method for app discovery and distribution. The launch reflects a growing trend of merging AI capabilities with blockchain infrastructure to simplify user onboarding and reduce the technical complexity of managing digital assets.
