Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky has entered the conversation around real-world asset (RWA) tokenization, offering a grounded perspective that shifts the focus from blockchain innovation to the human element of trust. In a Twitter thread and subsequent interview, Chesky revealed he has been quietly observing the RWA space, pointing out that 'something real is happening' beneath the noise.
Chesky argued that while much of the discussion centers on tokens and blockchain infrastructure, the true breakthrough lies in making ownership more accessible. 'Ownership stops being a privilege and starts being a default when owning a portion of a building, a bond, or a fund becomes as easy as sending a message,' he said. Tokenization enables fractional ownership of traditional assets like real estate, bonds, and private credit, along with around-the-clock markets and near-instant settlement — a shift that could lower barriers for a wider range of investors.
However, Chesky stressed that technology alone will not determine the winners. Drawing a direct parallel to Airbnb’s early days, he recalled how the company had to build a trusted platform before strangers felt comfortable sharing homes. Similarly, he believes the organizations that succeed in RWA tokenization will be those that earn the right to be trusted with the management and custody of physical assets. 'The changes brought by RWA will likely feel slow for some time, but people will eventually realize that the world has suddenly transformed,' he added.
The comments come as major financial institutions continue to expand tokenization efforts, with analysts viewing RWAs as one of the most promising long-term growth sectors in crypto. Chesky’s emphasis on trust over technical sophistication serves as a strategic reminder that reputation, governance, and user confidence may ultimately define the market’s future.
