OpenAI is making its first move into consumer hardware with a screen-free smart speaker designed specifically for ChatGPT. Unlike traditional smart speakers, the portable device will act as a home AI companion, combining voice interactions with environmental awareness to provide contextual responses beyond simple commands.
The speaker will include a camera and sensors to recognize its surroundings, a rechargeable battery for room-to-room portability, and the ability to answer questions, play media, handle messages, and control smart home appliances through natural conversation. OpenAI views it as a new kind of home computer that extends ChatGPT beyond phones and desktops.
Jony Ive partnership and io Products acquisition
The project is being developed with former Apple design chief Jony Ive and his studio LoveFrom, following OpenAI's $6.5 billion acquisition of io Products. The startup, founded by Ive and ex-Apple designers Scott Cannon, Evans Hankey, and Tang Tan, brings engineering and hardware talent that will shape multiple AI-powered consumer devices. OpenAI is also exploring wearables, home robotics, and an AI-focused mobile product, aiming to release the speaker before a planned 2027 commercial launch.
Apple lawsuit casts a shadow
Apple has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and two former employees, alleging misappropriation of trade secrets to accelerate its device program. The legal action could potentially delay the hardware rollout, but OpenAI denies the allegations, stating it has no interest in using competitors' confidential information.
The speaker represents OpenAI's effort to build a dedicated hardware ecosystem around ChatGPT, expanding its AI beyond software platforms.
