Zcash, a long-standing privacy-focused cryptocurrency, has taken a major step toward solving its throughput bottleneck with the release of the Zakura full node client. Historically, the network could process only around one shielded transaction per second, a stark contrast to mainstream payment systems. The new client, launched on July 15 by Valar Group and Project Tachyon, is engineered to eventually support 50,000 private transactions per second—a figure that rivals Visa’s capacity.
The announcement comes alongside benchmark results that demonstrate dramatically faster node synchronization. According to the developers, a standard blockchain sync took just 4 hours and 20 minutes, compared to over 20 hours for the existing Zebra client. Archive snapshots completed in 37 minutes, and pruned snapshots in under two minutes—reducing setup time by a factor of 680 in the pruned scenario. The client also introduces support for the upcoming Ironwood network upgrade (Network Upgrade 6.3), set to activate around July 28 at block 3,428,143, which adds a new shielded pool and transaction format.
Zakura addresses a critical infrastructure gap. By rewriting the execution path for shielded transactions at the client level rather than requiring a protocol-wide fork, node operators can adopt it independently. This approach mirrors Ethereum’s push for client diversity. The node comes with compatibility for the legacy Zcashd RPC interface, allowing wallets and exchanges to migrate without reinventing integrations. This is timely, as the original Zcashd client reached its support halt on July 18, blocking further use after block 3,417,100.
The Zcash Foundation has cautiously welcomed the new client, noting its benefits in sync speed, pruning, and compatibility, while recommending that operators run Zebra alongside Zakura for independent consensus checks. The foundation also plans conformance testing to ensure compliance with network specifications.
While the performance claims are impressive, real-world conditions—adversarial network activity, heterogeneous node hardware, and block propagation constraints—remain an open question. Moreover, scaling private transactions to Visa levels could invite fresh regulatory scrutiny. Exchanges that support shielded pools may need to re-evaluate their compliance workflows if Zakura delivers on its promise. The client’s experimental peer-to-peer transport layer, designed for sub-500ms block propagation and enhanced DoS resistance, is still in early stages and disabled by default.
Zcash’s price has surged over 58% in recent weeks, partly driven by the renewed developer momentum and the tangible catalyst of a live scaling client. The network’s consistent presence in developer activity rankings underscores that the project is more than a speculative asset. The Zakura release transforms theoretical research into measurable progress, though the path to full payment-network parity still hinges on operator adoption, sustained performance, and regulatory navigation.
