Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has shared new insights on the rapid evolution of artificial intelligence, arguing that AI systems are already surpassing humans in multiple domains and that the traditional one-dimensional metrics of intelligence fail to capture this progress.
In a thread on X, Buterin compared the current AI landscape to the era of watermills and windmills around the year 1500, when machines outperformed humans in specific energy-related tasks but humans remained superior in most other activities. He explained that modern AI follows a similar trajectory but on a much broader scale, with systems improving across coding, research, communication, and data analysis simultaneously.
Buterin emphasized that rather than asking whether AI has become “smarter” than humans, the more relevant question is how many different activities AI can perform effectively. This shift in perspective, he argued, has significant implications for blockchain and decentralized technologies, which are already exploring ways to support AI through transparent data management, digital ownership, and open participation models.
Ethereum has become a key infrastructure layer for applications experimenting with decentralized finance, digital assets, and automated systems. As AI capabilities continue to expand, blockchain networks could play a critical role in building systems where users retain greater control over data and digital interactions, aligning with Buterin’s long-standing emphasis on security and individual autonomy.
