Bitcoin’s social sentiment has plunged to its worst reading on record after a firmware exploit on the popular Coldcard hardware wallet triggered an unprecedented wave of fear across crypto communities. Data from analytics platform Santiment shows the positive-to-negative commentary ratio across X, Reddit, Telegram, and other major platforms dropped to just 0.58 – the lowest level since the firm began monitoring Bitcoin-related discussions.
The panic is rooted in a security incident disclosed last week, in which attackers distributed malicious firmware capable of stealing wallet seed phrases during device setup. Coldcard users who installed the compromised software unknowingly exposed their recovery phrases. A coordinated 41-minute operation then drained roughly 1,200 wallets, transferring out nearly 1,100 BTC – worth over $70 million at current prices. All theft transactions shared an unusual fingerprint: identical 30 sat/vB fees, far above prevailing network rates, pointing to an automated sweeping tool. Notably, the attack was executed more than a day before Coldcard issued a public warning.
Santiment noted that this sentiment freefall dwarfs earlier market shocks. Even the collapses of FTX and Mt. Gox, or the COVID-19 crash, did not generate such an extreme imbalance between bullish and bearish voices. The analytics firm explained that previous crises mainly affected exchanges and custodians, whereas the Coldcard exploit strikes at the heart of self‑custody – long considered the gold standard for Bitcoin security. “The indicator measures crowd psychology, not blockchain activity,” Santiment emphasized, while acknowledging that extreme readings have historically coincided with major market turning points.
Binance co-founder Changpeng Zhao weighed in, cautioning that “nothing is 100% certain” and urging investors to stay informed. Meanwhile, Bitcoin’s price has remained relatively resilient, slipping only modestly amid the fear; many analysts attribute the minor losses to other factors such as escalating Middle East tensions. Still, the sheer dominance of security-related discussions over price speculation has reshaped the online conversation, making hardware wallet integrity the new focal point for retail investors.
The incident underscores how a single hardware exploit can erode trust in the infrastructure that underpins long-term Bitcoin storage, even if the network itself remains unaffected. As the community grapples with the fallout, the record bearish sentiment serves as a stark reminder of the psychological fragility surrounding self-custody in an industry built on decentralization.
