Cloudflare has announced the initial rollout of programmable stablecoin wallets designed to let AI agents autonomously pay for APIs, data, and online content. The first phase, revealed on Tuesday, allows users to claim a unique Cloudflare Wallet handle tied to their account. Core features such as funding with stablecoins and agent-based purchases are expected to become available soon.
The wallet solution includes two formats: an Account Wallet for individuals and organizations to add funds and manage spending, and a Virtual Wallet that operates through API keys, enabling agents to make purchases on behalf of their owners. Users can configure allowances, approved merchant lists, and maximum transaction sizes, allowing agents to test low-cost APIs and select the best option without constant human approval or risk of uncontrolled spending.
Micropayments are facilitated by the x402 protocol, developed and backed by Coinbase. This protocol allows websites to return payment instructions upon an agent’s request, enabling payment and access without traditional accounts, subscriptions, or API keys. The rollout builds on Cloudflare and Coinbase’s establishment of the x402 foundation in September 2025, aimed at promoting machine-to-machine payment standards. Cloudflare has also partnered with Visa, Mastercard, and American Express on standards to help merchants identify trusted AI agents, complementing its recently launched Monetization Gateway for sellers.
