Crypto asset manager Hashdex is closing its US-listed spot Bitcoin ETF (ticker DEFI) and will liquidate the fund’s underlying holdings, a process expected to involve the sale of roughly 225 BTC. According to a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, trading will cease on August 17, with cash distributions to shareholders anticipated around August 24.
The fund currently manages about $14.3 million in net assets, making it one of the smallest spot Bitcoin ETFs on the market. The decision is driven by commercial considerations, not a shift in Hashdex’s view on Bitcoin. The ETF originally launched as a Bitcoin futures product before converting to a spot vehicle in 2024, but never gained sufficient scale to compete with dominant issuers like BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) and Fidelity’s Wise Origin Bitcoin Fund (FBTC).
The wind-down underscores the intensifying competition in the spot Bitcoin ETF space, where assets have become concentrated among a handful of large players with lower fees and broader distribution. While the sale of 225 BTC is modest relative to daily spot volumes, the closure serves as a clear signal that regulatory approval alone does not guarantee commercial viability. Hashdex continues to operate other cryptocurrency products globally, including a crypto index ETF that recently added Cardano and Chainlink.
Market participants will monitor the final liquidation timeline and distribution details, though the direct impact on Bitcoin’s price is expected to be negligible.
