MessariCrypto’s latest analysis has revealed a stark reality for the cryptocurrency market: since the November 2021 peak, only one token, OKB, has managed to stay in positive territory against Bitcoin. In a thread posted by analyst Carlos Gonzalez Campo, the firm highlighted that while 187 tokens outperformed Bitcoin during the 2020-21 bull run, just 22 tokens have done better than BTC over the last 24 months. Of those, OKB is the sole asset to maintain its lead when measured from the 2021 high.
The data underscores a brutal rotation among altcoins. 86% of the tokens that once beat Bitcoin have collapsed at least 90% from their all-time highs, with the median decline among them reaching an eye-watering -98%. Even within the recent crop of outperformers, exchange tokens stood out, capturing a 32% share. Names like Binance’s BNB, Gate’s GT, Bitfinex’s LEO, Bitget’s BGB, WhiteBIT’s WBT, MEXC’s MX, and PancakeSwap’s CAKE made the list, alongside OG cryptocurrencies such as ETH, SOL, and TRON. Yet OKB, the native token of the OKX exchange, remains in a tier of its own for its longevity.
The broader market backdrop adds context. By late June 2026, over 84% of altcoins traded below their 200-day moving average—the longest such stretch since the 2022 bear market. Bitcoin’s resilience as a benchmark has only grown, with ETH’s 20.32% July gain being one of the rare instances of outperformance. For investors, the message is clear: holding Bitcoin has become the surer bet, while spotting durable winners among altcoins is harder than ever.
