Proof of Play, the Web3 game development studio known for Pirate Nation, announced on August 4 that it will cease operations after failing to establish a scalable and sustainable business model. The closure comes despite backing from prominent venture capital firm a16z, which led its seed round, and a reported $33 million in funding raised by September 2023.
The company, founded in 2022, aimed to leverage blockchain technology to give players lasting ownership and allow games to outlive their original developers. However, in a statement posted on X, the team admitted it "couldn't build a product and sustainable business that proved out this thesis at scale." No specific closure date, employee impact, or remaining financials were disclosed.
The shutdown is a significant setback in the Web3 gaming sector, which has seen similar retreats. Uncharted closed alongside Fishing Frenzy earlier, and Yield Guild Games shut down YGG Play while cutting 35 positions. Proof of Play's failure highlights persistent challenges with user retention, monetization, and reliance on token incentives.
To preserve community value, the studio released core assets publicly. The Pirate Nation Unity client, smart contracts, and artwork were published on GitHub under MIT and CC0 licenses. The artificial intelligence coding agent PopBot was also made available as a reference. These releases allow developers to modify and reuse components, but the original backend remains unavailable, and the game will not run as a live service.
The Pirate Nation Foundation will continue operating independently and support the $PIRATE token. Following the announcement, PIRATE fell nearly 14% to around $0.00112, with a market cap of approximately $803,000. Proof of Play’s internal reward points, however, will not be redeemable for any compensation. Separately, the mobile game Shiba Story Go was acquired by an undisclosed third party and will carry on under new ownership.
