Key takeaways:

  • Integrating USDC for stock funding strengthens stablecoin's bridge role between crypto and traditional finance.
  • UK's underpenetrated retail stock market offers growth, but crypto user conversion faces adoption risks.
  • Coinbase's regulatory momentum could fast-track tokenized equities, boosting blockchain infrastructure demand.

Coinbase has officially launched 24-hour trading of approximately 4,000 U.S. listed equities for eligible users in the United Kingdom, advancing its ambition to become an “Everything Exchange.” Starting August 6, 2026, UK customers can buy, sell, and manage stocks alongside their crypto and fiat holdings directly within the Coinbase app.

The service offers zero-commission trading and fractional shares, allowing investments from as little as £1. Trades can be funded instantly with either GBP or USDC. Keith Grose, Regional Managing Director UK and Europe at Coinbase, emphasized the strategic importance, stating that the company is building a “one-stop shop where users can seamlessly access stocks, stablecoins, savings, and more from a single platform.”

This move follows Coinbase’s U.S. equities launch in February 2026 and reinforces its push into traditional securities. The company sees the UK—its largest market after the U.S.—as pivotal for growth, noting that UK retail investors historically lag behind their U.S. counterparts in stock market participation. Coinbase believes its platform can help close this divide.

The launch leverages Coinbase’s existing UK MiFID investment services authorization, obtained in July. Grose revealed that Coinbase holds a MiCA license from Luxembourg and is actively working with regulators across Europe to expand services. He added that the company supports the UK’s emerging crypto regulatory framework, expected in October 2027, calling it “a green light” for integrating crypto and traditional finance under one roof.

Competing with established platforms like eToro and Trading 212, Coinbase is betting on its large crypto user base to drive stock trading adoption. It also plans additional products including derivatives for professional traders and, eventually, tokenized equities.
