Monthly payment volume on crypto payment cards has climbed to more than $759 million, with nearly 9 million purchases recorded in July alone, according to a recent a16z crypto survey and additional market data. This marks a sharp increase from about 5.2 million transactions in the same month a year prior, and the average transaction size stood at $86.
The surge highlights the expanding role of stablecoins as a medium of exchange, as crypto cards allow users to deposit stablecoins with an issuer or use self-custodied stablecoins to pay at millions of merchants globally. The report notes that RedotPay holds the largest market share among major crypto cards as of July 31, while providers like Ether.fi (ETHFI), KAST, and Karta have steadily increased their presence since late last year.
This growth is seen as a significant step toward mainstream adoption, offering an alternative to traditional banking for users in underbanked regions. However, challenges such as regulatory uncertainty, market volatility, and compliance requirements remain. The data underscores the broader trend of stablecoin infrastructure maturing and linking digital dollars to real-world commerce, potentially attracting further institutional and regulatory attention.
