Robinhood Brings Crypto Trading to the UK

Key takeaways:

  • Robinhood's zero-fee UK rollout may amplify retail inflows into Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP, and Hyperliquid.
  • Hidden FX and weekend conversion costs could limit active trader adoption despite zero trading fees.
  • Prioritizing geographic distribution over falling crypto revenue suggests strategic positioning for structural UK adoption.

Robinhood has started rolling out crypto trading to eligible customers in the United Kingdom, adding more than 50 digital assets directly inside its main investing app. The new UK crypto service includes access to Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP, and Hyperliquid, alongside Robinhood's existing UK products such as stocks and shares ISAs, equities, options, and futures.

The crypto offering operates through Bitstamp UK Ltd, which is registered with the Financial Conduct Authority as a crypto-asset service provider. Robinhood's UK arm joined the FCA register on July 31, ahead of the UK's new crypto authorization regime. The launch carries zero trading, account maintenance, or custody fees, though customers still pay a 0.10% foreign exchange fee and 0.30% on weekend conversions.

Robinhood is also introducing Cortex Digests for Crypto, a generative-AI tool that explains crypto price moves in plain English by processing breaking news, market data, and technical indicators. Jordan Sinclair, president of Robinhood UK and general manager of Bitstamp UK, said a new wave of UK investors sees digital assets as a standard part of a diversified portfolio rather than a separate speculative bet.

Crypto held through Bitstamp UK falls outside the Financial Services Compensation Scheme and Financial Ombudsman Service protections that cover Robinhood's traditional investment products. The UK rollout follows Robinhood's $200 million acquisition of Bitstamp, which closed in mid-2025 and gave Robinhood regulatory reach across more than 50 jurisdictions in the EU, UK, and Asia. The launch arrives about fourteen months after that deal closed, as the FCA's new crypto authorization regime takes effect.

Robinhood had previously confirmed plans to bring crypto products to Singapore via Bitstamp as its Asia headquarters, and its Canadian expansion through Bitbuy and Coinsquare has given it roughly 300,000 funded customers. The UK move comes as Robinhood's crypto transaction revenue fell 38% year-over-year to $100 million in the second quarter, making the expansion more about building geographic distribution than chasing short-term trading volumes.
