Ether.fi (ETHFI) has rallied nearly 30% over the past week to trade around $0.51, extending a breakout that accelerated after the protocol launched a major update to its neobank product on August 13. CoinGecko data showed ETHFI up 7.7% over 24 hours and 29.9% over seven days as of August 17, with most of the move occurring since August 13 when the token was trading near $0.37–$0.39.
The catalyst was Ether.fi's Summer release, which expanded the project from its staking roots into trading, borrowing, and payment services. The update introduced tokenized stocks and metals through xStocks, allowing users to access traditional assets alongside crypto in the same app. It also added portfolio-backed borrowing via an integrated Aave market on Optimism with borrowing rates around 4%, and expanded fiat access to support more than 30 currencies and payment methods.
Ether.fi had already migrated its product infrastructure to Optimism earlier in the year, with over 70,000 active cards, 300,000 accounts, and $200 million in TVL moved to OP Mainnet by April. Crucially, the product structure links protocol revenue to token buybacks: part of revenue is distributed to staked ETHFI holders, and governance previously approved a treasury program authorizing up to $50 million in ETHFI purchases while the token trades below $3. Increased usage of staking, payments, borrowing, and trading products could feed automatic ETHFI purchases, giving traders a token-specific catalyst.
Large-holder activity has added to the momentum. One whale withdrew roughly 5 million ETHFI (about $1.93 million) from Binance, while other large holders accumulated through CoW Protocol. Exchange withdrawals reduce immediately available sell-side liquidity, though they do not guarantee long-term holding.
On the technical side, ETHFI broke above its 50-day, 100-day, and 200-day simple moving averages—a significant change after months below the 200-day SMA near $0.433. The daily MACD line rose to approximately 0.0198 with a positive histogram of 0.0147, signaling accelerated bullish momentum. Immediate resistance sits around $0.52, with a daily close above that potentially opening a move toward $0.55 and then $0.60. Support lies at the 4-hour Supertrend around $0.466–$0.47 and the 200-day SMA at $0.433.
Meanwhile, Ethereum (ETH) remains trapped between key moving averages. Net Taker Volume has been slightly negative since early August, indicating mild seller dominance in perpetual futures, while funding rates remain positive at approximately 0.0049%, showing a slight long bias. Open Interest rose to $25.94 billion on Monday from $24 billion the previous day, but the broader trend reflects weak participation. ETH trades around its 20-day EMA at $1,884, with the 100-day EMA at $1,920 capping upside. RSI at 49 and Stochastic near 50 reflect balanced momentum. A break above $1,920 could target $1,961, while a daily close below the 50-day EMA at $1,865 could extend declines toward $1,809.
