Riot Platforms, one of the largest publicly traded Bitcoin miners in the United States, disclosed that it sold 9,665 BTC during the first half of 2026, generating $732.46 million in proceeds. The figures were included in the company’s quarterly filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission for the period ended June 30, 2026.
The disposal represents a major treasury movement rather than incidental activity. Riot has previously used its Bitcoin holdings for liquidity, including an earlier sale of 4,300 BTC to fund operations. The latest sale moves the company away from a pure accumulation posture toward converting mined Bitcoin into cash to support operating expenses, energy costs, debt obligations, and infrastructure investments.
On-chain data cited in coverage from Lookonchain and Arkham indicates that Riot also deposited 200 BTC, worth approximately $12.86 million, with NYDIG, a crypto lender and subsidiary of Stone Ridge Holdings. The deposit suggests Riot is using a portion of its Bitcoin as collateral for financing, a common approach among miners seeking liquidity without selling additional coins or diluting shareholders.
The strategic backdrop includes tight margins following the 2024 halving, which reduced block rewards from 6.25 BTC to 3.125 BTC. Riot produced 2,053 BTC in the second quarter alone, a 45% year-over-year increase driven by expanded hash rate capacity. Its Whinstone facility in Texas remains one of the largest Bitcoin mining sites in North America. The company’s first-half revenue was reported around $350 million, with Bitcoin mining accounting for the vast majority.
The sale adds to Bitcoin’s available supply and may create short-term selling pressure, although it also reflects disciplined treasury management if prices remain favorable. Investors will monitor future Riot disclosures to see whether the miner continues converting holdings at a comparable pace.
