The tokenized equities segment has grown to 15% of the real-world asset (RWA) market, a threefold increase since the start of the year, according to data from The Block. Total market capitalization for tokenized stocks now stands at approximately $2.8 billion, and RWA transfer volume more than doubled in August to $20 billion, up from $9 billion a month earlier.
Despite representing a relatively small portion of the broader RWA market, tokenized equities have become a key entry point for retail investors exploring onchain applications. Three platforms have emerged as dominant players: Ondo Finance leads with $957 million, Binance bStocks holds $622 million, and Kraken xStocks commands $600 million. Together they account for 77% of the tokenized stock market.
Each of the leading products uses synthetic representations of underlying stocks, aiming to replicate stock performance while giving investors a blockchain-based derivative for trading. Other firms, including Securitize and Superstate, are pursuing a different path: issuing actual equity onchain so that blockchain-based shares carry the same rights as conventional shares. This highlights a broader industry choice between faster distribution of synthetic tokens and native onchain tokenization with full ownership, governance, and shareholder protections.
For investors, the growth highlights possible benefits such as increased liquidity, fractional ownership, and 24/7 trading. However, the sector remains nascent, and regulatory frameworks are still evolving. Questions around investor protection, market integrity, and cross-border compliance are likely to shape the next phase of expansion.
