Ava Labs Chief Business Officer John Nahas said the cryptocurrency industry is in a 'teenage pubescent phase' — 'full of acne and we don't know what we're doing' — but he has never been more bullish on real-world adoption. Speaking with The Block's Kelvin Sparks at the Wyoming Blockchain Symposium 2026, Nahas said the market is finally catching up to Avalanche's long-standing focus on practical applications rather than short-term speculative cycles.
Real-world adoption accelerating
Nahas highlighted corporate payments, government-level blockchain adoption, identity systems, and World Cup ticketing as examples of digital assets moving beyond speculation. He said the industry's maturation is being driven by utility and integration, even as regulatory uncertainty and market volatility persist.
Avalanche's technological edge
Nahas credited Avalanche's ability to spin up jurisdiction-compliant, asset- or business-specific custom Layer 1 blockchains as a key advantage over other public, permissionless chains. 'Everyone else is fit your business or your asset or use case on our technology,' he said. 'For us, it's our technology can conform to make your business better.'
Market context and leadership change
His comments came as bitcoin traded above $78,000, up more than 8% over 24 hours, while ether was above $2,400, up 6%. Despite the down market, Nahas said, 'I have never seen more opportunities.' Ava Labs is also undergoing a leadership transition: President John Wu is moving to a senior adviser role after seven years, while former Chief Operating Officer Charley Cooper becomes president and retains the COO title.
