Self-custody often begins with a hardware wallet, but the device itself is only one part of a reliable recovery plan. If the wallet is lost, damaged or stops working, the recovery phrase may be the only way back to the assets. That makes the backup a security problem of its own. Paper can burn, fade, get wet or be thrown away, while screenshots and cloud notes may survive a house fire but create digital exposure.
BIP39, the standard behind many cryptocurrency recovery phrases, uses an ordered sequence of words selected from a defined list of 2,048 words. A backup must remain understandable when it is eventually needed, but it cannot be so exposed that anyone who finds it can immediately use it. Paper scores highly for simplicity, but its weakness is physical resilience. Cloud storage can survive physical damage, but storing raw seed information online increases the digital attack surface. Relying only on the original hardware wallet creates a single point of failure.
This is why metal seed backups have become part of the broader self-custody market. Stainless steel and titanium are less vulnerable to water, heat, humidity and gradual deterioration, while punched or engraved markings do not depend on ink. However, a metal backup is not infallible: it can still be stolen, recorded incorrectly, forgotten, or become too complicated to reconstruct years later.
The market can be divided into several design approaches. Billfodl uses a 316 marine-grade stainless-steel chassis with engraved stainless-steel tiles. Keystone Tablet Punch uses 304 stainless steel and an automatic centre punch, with space for recovery phrases of up to 24 words. Cryptotag Zeus stores numerical BIP39 indexes on two 6 mm titanium plates with a manufacturer-stated heat resistance of 1,667°C. UKey Seed Ti records BIP39 indexes on a TC4 titanium plate measuring 107.47 x 68.41 mm, 3 mm thick and weighing 98 g, supporting up to 24 seed words and two passphrases. Cryptosteel Capsule places character tiles on an internal steel core inside a cylindrical shell, using AISI 303 stainless steel for the shell and AISI 304 for the core, separators, fasteners and character tiles.
Index-based designs such as UKey Seed Ti and Cryptotag Zeus avoid storing full recovery words in plain text, but they introduce a trade-off: recovery becomes more dependent on accurate documentation, correct ordering information and the same language version of the BIP39 word list used when the backup was created. Durability and recoverability are not the same thing. A strong material is only useful if the recovery information is recorded correctly and can still be understood years later. Storage also matters; keeping the wallet and its only backup in the same place exposes both to the same fire, flood or theft. Ultimately, crypto security must survive ordinary failures, not just hacks and phishing.
