SAND, the native token of The Sandbox ecosystem, came under heavy selling pressure on August 22, 2026, after reports emerged of suspected irregular minting in the project's token contract on Base, Coinbase's layer-2 network.
According to ChainCatcher and social media claims, an address identified as 0x6762…257e allegedly obtained minting authority and has been issuing SAND tokens without apparent limits. More than 500 million new SAND tokens are said to have been created through this mechanism, although The Sandbox team had not released an official statement at the time of reporting.
Market reaction was swift. SAND's price fell roughly 5.5%, futures open interest reportedly increased by about 16% in an hour, and trading volume surged to approximately 24 times normal levels. Funding rates turned sharply negative, indicating traders were building short positions as uncertainty about token supply and contract security grew.
The incident raises concerns about potential dilution if the newly minted tokens are sold, and highlights risks around smart contract permissions in GameFi and decentralized infrastructure. Analysts are still investigating whether the breach resulted from a contract vulnerability, a compromised private key, or an inside action.
