Zcash (ZEC) staged a powerful breakout on Aug. 22, rising from an earlier level around $734.42 to an intraday high of $809.10. That marked a 10.17% gain in just one hour and a 41.82% advance over 24 hours, with trading volume reaching approximately $410.99 million. The day’s range stretched from a low of $650.57 to the high of $809.10, underlining significant volatility.
The main catalyst was not a broad macro shift, but a regulatory development: Grayscale Investments submitted an amended S-3 registration statement to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission for a spot Zcash ETF. According to the filing, the proposed fund could begin listing as early as Aug. 25, pending regulatory approval.
The filing is a notable milestone for Zcash, a privacy-focused cryptocurrency that has historically lagged behind Bitcoin and Ethereum in institutional adoption. A spot ZEC ETF would allow investors to gain regulated exposure to Zcash without directly holding the underlying asset, potentially improving liquidity and mainstream acceptance. The market reaction was immediate, with ZEC jumping more than 20% on major exchanges such as Binance to trade near $735 before extending higher.
Still, regulatory hurdles remain. The SEC has been cautious about approving crypto ETFs, particularly for assets with privacy features linked to illicit-use concerns. Traders are now watching key technical levels: support near $734.42 and resistance around the recent high of $809.10. A break above the high could extend bullish momentum, while a fall below support may trigger caution.
