Germany Widens EU Crypto Licensing Lead as Six More Banks Join MiCA Register

Key takeaways:

  • Germany's MiCA dominance reflects regulatory head start, now exporting crypto services EU-wide.
  • Traditional banks onboarding crypto via custody partnerships lowers retail barriers, boosting adoption.
  • Non-compliant entity list persisting signals enforcement gap despite growing licensed provider count.

The European Securities and Markets Authority has updated its interim Markets in Crypto-Assets register, adding six German cooperative banks and lifting the number of authorized crypto-asset service providers across the European Union to 331.

The six new additions — Raiffeisenbank Aidlingen, Ihre Volksbank, VR Bank Mittelfranken Mitte, Volksbank Euskirchen, VR Bank Ried Überwald and Volksbank Backnang — push Germany’s total to 79 licensed CASPs, extending its clear lead over France with 35 and the Netherlands with 29.

Germany has widened its MiCA lead significantly since late June, when it had 57 licensed providers. The EU-wide register contained 244 valid MiCA licenses as of June 29, rose to 309 by July 23, and now stands at 331. The expansion continues after the July 1, 2026, deadline that ended MiCA’s transitional arrangements for firms previously operating under national rules.

The latest approvals highlight how traditional financial institutions, particularly cooperative banks, are entering the regulated crypto market. DZ Bank has already begun rolling out crypto trading through participating cooperative banks after receiving BaFin approval in January for its meinKrypto platform. The service supports Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin and Cardano, with Boerse Stuttgart Digital selected to handle custody, allowing retail customers to buy and sell digital assets through their existing banking relationships.

BaFin has attributed Germany’s leading position partly to the size of its financial sector and its pre-MiCA regulatory framework, which already treated crypto custody as a regulated financial service. MiCA allows authorized providers to passport services across EU member states, creating a harmonized licensing regime for custody, trading platforms, crypto exchange, order execution, portfolio management and transfer services.

While the CASP register keeps growing, ESMA’s other MiCA datasets were unchanged: the asset-referenced token register remained empty, the electronic money token register held at 43 entries, and the list of non-compliant entities stayed at 167.
