Key takeaways:

  • Satoshi's untouched stash highlights massive supply overhang, though movement remains unlikely.
  • Recent 2012 wallet transfer signals old-coins monitoring as key sentiment indicator.
  • Investors should watch dormant BTC activity for potential sell-side pressure signals.

Bitcoin’s powerful week-long rally has pushed the estimated value of Satoshi Nakamoto’s dormant holdings up by roughly $15 billion, spotlighting the enormous unrealized fortune of the pseudonymous creator as BTC climbed nearly 22% from a low of $62,679 on August 17 to a high of $81,265 on Tuesday.

Arkham Intelligence currently maps about 1.096 million BTC across approximately 22,000 addresses linked to Satoshi. At Bitcoin’s price of about $78,280, those holdings were worth $85.82 billion, up from $71 billion before the latest upward move and slightly below the recent peak of $87 billion when Bitcoin traded above $81,000. The exact extent of Satoshi’s stash remains uncertain, but the coins are widely believed to have remained untouched.

While Satoshi’s main holdings have stayed dormant, activity among older wallets continues. Galaxy Research flagged a transfer of 40 BTC that had been untouched since May 28, 2012, moving in block 964127. The recipient was identified as German crypto custody provider Boerse Stuttgart Digital, with no sender attribution available. The coins were initially worth only about $200 when acquired at around $5 each; at the time of the transfer they were worth roughly $3.14 million, representing an estimated realized profit of $3.16 million and a gain of about 1,535,911%.
