Global markets turned cautious on August 27 as traders awaited the Federal Reserve’s Jackson Hole Symposium, with currency markets holding narrow ranges ahead of key central bank signals. The dollar index was steady near 101.5, while the euro traded around 1.0840, the British pound near 1.2750, and the Australian dollar near 0.6650. The Japanese yen remained a focal point, with USD/JPY volatility reflecting both US data and fresh comments from the Bank of Japan.
US inflation data showed the Personal Consumption Expenditures index rose 3.7% year-over-year in July, unchanged from June and above the Fed’s 2% target. Month-over-month PCE came in at 0.2%, also above expectations. With average US gasoline prices stuck above $4 a gallon and diesel approaching its record high, traders are watching whether persistent price pressures will shape the Federal Reserve’s next move.
Attention is now on the Fed chair’s keynote at Jackson Hole. Market pricing highlights deep uncertainty: Polymarket showed about a 53% probability of a December rate hike, while CME FedWatch data pointed to a roughly 70% chance of a 25-basis-point cut in September. Robert Gill, a portfolio manager at Fairbank Investment, said the lack of clear forward guidance “is causing uncertainty and contributing to higher long-term bond yields.”
Meanwhile, Bank of Japan Deputy Governor Ryozo Himino signaled that a rate hike could be considered at the next meeting if inflation remains stubbornly high. He warned that inflation above the 2% target would have an adverse impact on the economy. A BoJ hike would support the yen and reduce the appeal of carry trades, potentially tightening global liquidity conditions.
From a technical perspective, USD/JPY has formed an ascending triangle pattern and the MACD indicator has moved above the zero line, with resistance near 159.72 and the year-to-date high at 163.97. However, broader FX volatility remained subdued, as measured by the CBOE FX Volatility Index, reflecting the wait-and-see mood before the Fed event.
For crypto markets, the Jackson Hole outcome matters because Bitcoin, Ethereum and other digital assets have become increasingly sensitive to dollar liquidity and rate expectations. A hawkish surprise could pressure risk assets, while a dovish signal may support a broader risk-on move.
