The US dollar traded in a cautious range on Wednesday as markets awaited a speech by Federal Reserve Governor Kevin Warsh, according to analysts at ING. The subdued currency moves reflect uncertainty over the path of US monetary policy and its implications for the greenback.
Market participants are closely watching Warsh’s remarks for signals on interest rates. ING noted that the dollar’s recent performance has been shaped by robust US economic data, persistent inflation concerns, and geopolitical tensions, with traders reluctant to take large positions before the speech.
OCBC Bank echoed a similar theme, arguing that the dollar’s resilience is rooted in policy reality: the Federal Reserve’s cautious approach to rate cuts, sticky inflation pressures, and the relative outperformance of the US economy compared with the eurozone and the UK. OCBC highlighted policy divergence, noting that while the European Central Bank and the Bank of England have signaled potential cuts, the Fed has maintained a higher-for-longer stance.
Both institutions warned that a repricing of rate expectations could trigger volatility. ING pointed out that unexpected hawkish comments from Warsh could strengthen the dollar, while a dovish tone could lead to a pullback, with spillovers into commodities, emerging market currencies and global trade. OCBC added that market pricing has often been more aggressive on Fed cuts than the central bank itself, and alignment with policy reality tends to favor the dollar over time.
For crypto markets, dollar strength and Fed rate expectations are closely watched because a stronger dollar and higher-for-longer rates can pressure risk assets. The cautious, resilient dollar backdrop therefore remains a neutral-to-negative macro signal for digital assets in the near term.
