Key takeaways:

  • Nimiq's zero-fee framework challenges traditional app stores, potentially boosting NIM demand.
  • AI-assisted development lowers entry barriers, yet the modest prize pool limits impact.
  • Submission quality will reveal whether crypto payment apps can achieve mainstream developer traction.

Berlin, Germany, August 27th, 2026 — Nimiq has officially opened Cycle II of its Mini Apps Competition, giving developers, AI builders and indie hackers four weeks to compete for a $17,000 prize pool. The cycle runs from Aug. 24 through Sept. 18 and is the second of three planned rounds offering more than $50,000 in total prizes.

The competition follows a strong debut that attracted 62 Mini App submissions. Builders use the Nimiq Pay Mini Apps Framework to create and host lightweight web applications that users access directly within Nimiq Pay. Nimiq Pay supplies wallet functionality and payment rails, while developers retain full control of their applications, infrastructure and intellectual property.

According to Nimiq, the framework removes common app distribution barriers: Mini Apps can be listed without submission fees, platform commissions or revenue sharing. Max Burger, Executive Director at Nimiq, called the moment an ‘App Store moment’ for crypto payments, noting that developers can ship extensions and reach real users immediately inside a connected app environment.

Eligible applications include games, productivity tools, marketplaces, social experiences and other web apps. Participants may use AI development tools throughout the build process, opening the competition to a broader range of creators. Registration and resources are available at miniappscompetition.com.
