Virtu Financial, M1X Global and Tradeweb completed an institutional repurchase transaction using a sovereign digital bond on Aug. 27, settling the full repo and repurchase cycle on the Canton Network in under 10 minutes.
The transaction used USDM1, a dollar-denominated sovereign bond issued natively onchain by the Republic of the Marshall Islands, as collateral. USDM1 is backed 1:1 by short-term U.S. Treasurys held in bankruptcy-remote custody and structured under New York law as a fully collateralized sovereign obligation.
According to a joint company release, securities delivery, the cash payment and the return leg settled atomically on Canton. The firms described it as the first known repo executed through a major institutional trading venue to combine natively issued sovereign collateral with fully onchain settlement and no prime broker. That designation remains a company claim because no independent industry registry tracks every private blockchain repo.
The companies did not disclose the transaction’s value, cash instrument, interest rate, maturity or the counterparties beyond Virtu’s involvement. Completing both legs within 10 minutes demonstrated technical settlement capability, but did not establish performance under heavy volumes or stressed market conditions.
USDM1 continues paying a sovereign coupon while pledged as repo collateral or margin, and can enter standard close-out netting arrangements. It is available through Tradeweb, with custody from Anchorage Digital, BitGo and tZERO; Bank of Guam has announced institutional support. USDM1 is offered outside the United States under Regulation S and generally cannot be sold or pledged to U.S. persons unless an exemption applies.
The repo follows a July transaction in which Tradeweb transferred a tokenized U.S. Treasury from Franklin Templeton to Virtu against USDCx. Canton has also been connected to Ethereum, Solana and Robinhood Chain via FalconX and Interstice, and World Liberty Financial issued its USD1 stablecoin natively on Canton. The next test is repeatability, as Virtu, M1X and Tradeweb did not announce another repo or a commercial launch schedule.
